My fiber artist friend, Georgianna, in nearby Garden Valley, Idaho is very talented! She selects beautiful stones polished to a high sheen to make a convertible spindle. Each spindle set comes with 1 large stone whorl and 1 smaller stone whorl, matched closely for appearance, a spindle shaft which doubles as a hair pick, and a black cord to wear one of the stone whorls as a pendant! Spin with the set or wear it your choice! The set comes packaged in a clear cellophane bag containing a cloud of Polwarth roving.
To assemble, push the large stone whorl onto the wood shaft from the bottom. Make sure the whorl is firmly seated onto the shaft. Then, push the smaller stone whorl onto the wood shaft, making sure it is also firmly seated onto the shaft. Lightly twirl the wood shaft to make it spin. If the spindles wobbles unevenly, turn the smaller whorl to fine-tune the balance. Remember, each stone is a natural product, thus weight may not be evenly distributed. The smaller whorl helps balance the weight distribution.
Each stone varies in weight and some types of stone are heavier than others. I weighed a sampling of the spindles and noted the total spindle weight shaft + large stone whorl + small stone whorl after each stone type. If total weight is a concern, please note the weight range you desire on your order.
The wood shaft with hook is 6 3/4" in length. The large stone whorl is approximately 2" in diameter; the small stone whorl is approximately 1 9/16" in diameter. Please email any questions to The Fiber Addict on availability of specific colors.
